I’m moving into my first one-bedroom apartment in a few weeks, preferably in the lower North Shore region (Evanston/Rogers Park) and I am not familiar with the prices of utilities in Chicago. How much can I expect to pay for heat, water, gas, and electricity? (And any others?) This is assuming I only use each utility when needed (no leaving computers or TV’s on all day!) What do cable/phone bills usually cost? Thanks!

I have an investment property that I can no longer make payments on and wanted to see if the lender can come after my salary, 401k, etc. in Virginia if I walk away from the house.

My mother is thinking about selling her late mother-in-law’s home in Fairfax Virginia that sits on exactly 1 acre. The house itself is pretty ran down so I’m sure it would just be bulldozed as the land is the real prize here. Any ideas?

Smart Buyer asked:

I am looking at property in the Michigan towns of Petoskey, Boyne City, Charlevoix, and futher south between New Buffalo and South Haven. I wonder if I will get more for my money in some other city on the shore that isn’t as popular but has a fun downtown experiencing revitalization. If you know what the next growth areas are along the lakeshore please fill me in. I’m looking to spend up to 200k, and would like to buy an older, small church building or something along those lines.

I am beginning the planning of a group house at the Jersey shore for a bunch of friends next summer but I don’t know how to go about splitting up the costs. I’ve heard people talk about it- half- shares, whole-shares, weekenders, etc. but i don’t know how to work it out. Thanks!

Duffman asked:

I have a job, near Freehold, and I’m tired of living with my parents, near Princeton. The Jersey shore appeals to me because it would be a shorter commute to work, and because there are things to do there (entertainment, bars, the beach, etc).

1. Is it a good place for someone in their early 20s?
2. Can I get an affordable apartment there?
3. Can you recommend a particular town or city for me?

Thank you for your help!
