eastern shore
Jane Doe asked:

What factors led to the establishment of English colonies along the eastern shore of America during the 1600s? What accounted for the differences between the settlement of Virginia and Massachusetts during this period? How did these differences affect their long term development? Did the differences eventually dissolve as colonial society matured? Or did the differences become more acute over time? Explain.

Mass. was founded by the puritans for freedom from religious prosecution. Virginia was a charter colony started by aristocrats.
therefore they was really different to begin with.

Mea (above) has it mostly right. Plymouth was settled by both Puritans and Pilgrims. They were two different groups, though, and should not be confused.
